Chef Jovie

Jovie saw Dr. McKane, cardiologist, for her heart in January. Still status quo on that front. She will need to be evaluated every year.

x-ray of plate from SUPERhip surgery

On June 2, 2021, during a visit with Dr. Flanagan, we booked Jovie's surgery to remove her plate and for Dr. Schrader to correct her acetabulum (hip socket).

Treatment of acetabular deficiency and proximal femoral deformity in cases of PFFD must be individualized. Reconstruction of the hip joint with pelvic and femoral osteotomies may be possible in mild cases of PFFD. Stability of the hip and knee joint must be achieved prior to consideration for limb lengthening strategies. Severe cases of PFFD may be beyond surgical correction and warrant alternative strategies such as rotationplasty or selective amputation to facilitate prosthetic fitting.

  • Hip stabilization, in which the hip socket (acetabulum) and femoral head are surgically corrected to address varus deformity (outwardly turned legs) and bone fractures that won’t mend without intervention (pseudoarthrosis). This procedure is only appropriate for children with Type A or B deficiencies.

We had a pretty quiet and normal summer of fun with friends and family before returning to school in August!

Jovie had surgery on October 6, 2021 to remove the plate from her proximal femoral osteotomy surgery and to reconstruct her socket. Her acetabulum on the left side remains dysplastic.

Then Big Brother, River, had a T&A (tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy) on November 11, 2021 for his constant PFAPA (periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, adenitis). It caused repeated episodes of fever, mouth sores, sore throat, and swollen lymph nodes.

Had a great Christmas! Saw Santa, went ice skating, and got a gymnastics bar from Santa! Happy girl!
